Goal Type:

5 K Finish

Running Accomplishments:

I started Runner's World beginning runners program (run 30 min. without stopping in 8 weeks) on Oct. 24, 2011. I was able to run a 5K without stopping 4 1/2 weeks later in 39 min. Soooo slow--but I did it! I've only missed 1 day of running (the day of the BIG WIND) since.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I want to run several 5Ks. I want to be able to run 3 miles in 30 min. I would really like to be able to run a 10K. I want to keep running every day!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to keep in shape so I can always keep up with my kids on the hike up to Cleo's Bath on Sonora Pass.

Personal:

I'm married with 7 incredible children. I work at home while keeping very involved in my 2 teenage boys' activities. I have an amazing husband who constantly cheers me on!

Soooooo hard to get out today. But, the dog has been driving me crazy and I need a day where she sleeps all day, so I needed to get out. And, I remembered that no one who goes running is ever sorry when it's through--so true. So glad it's done! I'm REALLY looking forward to the Sweethearts 5K on Saturday!

Good run today--but one of these days the dog and I will go down together. I need to train her to stay away from me better. But, she's so happy after a run! Me too!

Running with dogs is an art I'm choosing not to perfect :) I started letting her run while I ride my bike.

Nice job getting out and good luck on Saturday!! Sweethearts run sounds like a fun race!

Note to kids: I LOVE my GPS watch that you gave me for Christmas! It's the BEST! I'm more disappointed on bad weather days to not be able to use my watch than I am to have to get on the treadmill! Thank you!

Note to husband: I thought you said it was just over 2 mi. to get home from your office. My very cool GPS watch said it was just .64 mi. What a disappointment! Somehow, it seemed much longer than that.

Note to self: Be sure and check GPS watch to make sure you restart it after stopping it when picking up dog's poop.

Note to dog: It would be so helpful if you would learn to take care of business before we go out! I guess we both had stupid days today!

Dogs, all they do is bark and poop! why did I get one again?

I love my garmin and swear by it! :) It drives my husband nuts that I can estimate distances better than he can. Especially when it is along a route I've run numerous times :)

From catherine on Thu, Feb 09, 2012 at 16:56:01 from 98.202.112.38

From Dad's regular office? Google maps says between 2.3 and 2.6 depending on the route you took. Maybe the watch stopped counting for a bit?

Yay! What a fun race! My kids came to meet me for the last 1/4 mi., cheering me on and helping me to finish strong. I dropped over 5 min. from my last 5K on Thanksgiving, and finished 5th in my age division, up from 14th last time. Next race--Thanksgiving Point 5 K April 28. Goal--try to finish in under 30 min. I will have to do some serious higher intensity training to make it--but I'm sure I can get there!

I left the dog home today so I could concentrate on my "foot strike" (?). Apparently hitting with the heel isn't good, and it seems that's what I do. So I tried to strike on the ball of my foot. It wasn't too bad for the first half, but much harder to maintain on the second half when I was starting to get tired. Josh is having me watch running champions in show motion so I can try to get it right.

Also, Eric says my shoes are much too small. I have a hard time with shoes because my left foot is a full (or more) half size larger than my right foot (freak!) so if there's any room left in my left shoe my right shoe will be huge. So we'll have to work that out. I'm determined to run the Thanksgiving 5K in under 30 min., and I have time to work for that.

The weather was GREAT today!

Not a great week for intensity, butI kept the goals for mileage and amount of time per day, so that's still good. This next week I need to bump up the intensity so I'm well prepared for the next 5K at Thanksgiving Point. I figure I need to bump up the mileage so I can get 3 mi. in at a relatively level course. There are so many hills around here that I have to go further to stay (sort of) flat.

I stopped paying attention to running today for 1/2 mi.--while watching TV & running--all of a sudden I realized that I hadn't even been thinking about what I was doing--how fast or slow, how long it was taking, how I was feeling--my body was on autorun. It was a great feeling! That makes me think that maybe that is how it happens over time--your body just automatically goes in a totally natural manner. It was a (small) definite break though!

I think it is awesome that you have taken this up based on runners world. I'm also impressed with what you have accomplished so far. If you keep running, a 30 minute 5k and a sub 60 minute 10k are very real possibilities. I've been trying to get my wife to start doing this for a long time, but she refuses. So congrats for taking that first step (even thought the first step was taken a long time ago).

New *unofficial* goal--2.5 mi./day minimum. I'm kind of anxious about the Thanksgiving Point course--it looks like there's some serious uphill work. Maybe it's not as bad as it looks on their website? At least it looks like it comes more towards the beginning.

slooooooowest.day. ever. I couldn't seem to run more than 100 yds without walking. I don't know what my problem was--except that the route from MACU-home is all uphill (seriously) and that Red Iguana meal from last night made me feel like I was carrying a 50 lb. backpack. Oh well. So happy to have done it, though! I'm doing really well on mileage this week. Next few days will include hikes to Delicate Arch, Landscape Arch and Devil's Garden Campground.
